Gathering Inspiration

I’ve been getting ahead of myself. I’m already thinking of projects and accessories to outfit the new family room slash office before I even have a sofa. Care to see what I’ve been dreaming of putting in there, courtesy of Pinterest?

Just to refresh your memory, here’s the basic layout I’m envisioning. Party in the front, business in the back.

I’m thinking of doing a DIY stenciled rug. That means I can start with the cheapest flatwoven rug I can find and turn it into something special for almost no moolah.

A fun and quirky lamp, like this light-up dachshund, would certainly go a long way toward keeping things light (pun intended).

And since this room is right next to the front door some system for keeping things like invitations and cards on display might come in handy.

My desk has no drawers, so I’ve been dreaming for months of adding some function with open shelves above it. Has anyone noticed that I’m apparently completely obsessed with shelving? The lack of closets in this house always has me looking to the walls to pick up the slack.

A gallery of family photos around the TV would be really nice. I feel like family photos really put the “family” in family room. Oh, I crack myself up with all these little jokes.

I’m sure I’ll come up with more genius ideas as things come along. I’m really excited! I’ve never started with such a blank slate when decorating before. Overall, I really want this room to be a fun and family-friendly space to work and play. To me, that means tons of function (like the shelves) to take care of business balanced by quirky details (like the dachshund lamp) just to keep the space from taking itself too seriously. I can. not. wait. to get started. Just a few more paychecks and then new sofa, here I come!

As we finished our home which is still and always a work in progress, I found that decisions are the hardest part. Once the plan is made, it is full speed ahead. Good luck as you proceed.

Agreed! I like to let plans percolate and tweak for a while before making any big decisions. A budget is good for forcing me to proceed slowly!

  2. Oh I’m loving the red stencil rug! I vote yes!
