Happy Monday lovely people! At the risk of sounding completely obnoxious, can I just say that I love Mondays these days? It’s the beginning of another week spent hanging out with the best baby ever. This week, though, will be the first one that I start leaving him with a babysitter every Tuesday so I can go be a social worker (!). I went on a nanny-hunt last week and interviewed six people in a span of two days. They ranged in age from 18 to 73 and were all very nice. I ended up picking a super-sweet lady in her 50′s who promises to shower him with love in my absence. It’s kind of weird to be “hiring” somebody my mom’s age, but I guess if she was the kind of person who I thought I would need to act all boss-like with then I wouldn’t be hiring her anyway. She has lots of experience with babies and all her references gushed about how much their kids love her. Since hiring her I’m much less nervous about leaving him-now I’ve only got new-job jitters to contend with!
Anyway, all that aside, I wanted to show you my newest little decoration in the dining room.
When we were cleaning up the yard after Hurricane Isaac I found these two small branches from our oak tree that were just too pretty to toss in a pile at the curb. I thought they were kind of sculptural looking and worthy of display. Kind of like people who live near the ocean might display driftwood, I have a giant oak tree in my yard so it seems fitting for me to have some oak branches lying around. Oaks are also kind of sentimental for me because they’re a defining feature of the landscape at LSU, my beloved alma mater. Both my parents and Nick’s have them in their yards as well. They’re kind of a big deal around here, I guess.
They sat on the porch for a week or two until I got the idea to put them on a silver tray. The combination of silver+rustic/natural is kind of fun, I think. And if I ever get bored with them I can try something different, like wrapping them with yarn or dipping the ends in paint.

Fun, right? But I really like them au naturel for now, especially with fall right around the corner. I played around with putting a tall pillar candle in the middle or little tealights scattered underneath, but it was just too much. Having branches on your coffee table is weird enough without adding in fire hazards, I guess.
Hope you all are having a great week so far! I’m off to work on my detailed crazy neurotic first time mom instructions for the sitter, haha.
I like the oaks. I think anything natural is great. I filled a candy dish with acorns one time just because I liked the look of it, but got tired of everyone saying, “Do you eat those?” LOL
Only one attempted bite of an acorn will teach them!
Lol! We had a TON of acorns in our yard last year and I remember that I started collecting a few each day thinking I could fill a jar with them or something, but then I got pregnant and lost my motivation to bend over to pick them up!
Wow that was strange. I just wrote an really long comment
but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again.
Anyway, just wanted to say wonderful blog!
Weird! And thank you for your kind words! I hope you stick around for a while!
