Mason Jar Lid Pumpkin

I’m going to be honest. I totally stole this idea from a picture I saw on Facebook. But it was just too cool for me not to copy, and to cool not to share with you.

I already had everything I needed on hand so it was 100% free. This project was perfect for me because I love to use mason jars as vases, pencil holders, etc., but I usually have a surplus of lids. Finally, a fun use for them! I gathered a bunch of the rings and turned them into a pumpkin! It took me about two minutes.

First, thread all your lids onto a string. I used 16 and that was just barely enough. I started with 12, but that only made 3/4 of a pumpkin so I had to go scavenging around my house for more. It would probably look better with as many as 24 lids, but since the whole appeal of this project was that it was quick and free I really didn’t want to run out to the store for more lids.

Make sure all your lids are facing the same direction. Then, pull your string tight so that all of the rings are gathered into a circle, forming a pumpkin shape.

Tie your string tight and cut off the excess.

Then, go out in the yard and get yourself some short little sticks to be the stem. Just stick ‘em in there. If you want it to be more sturdy you might want to use some hot glue, but since I plan on disassembling this whole operation come December or so I left it glue-less.

And cut a little leaf shape out of whatever autumnal fabric you have handy. I used burlap. Again, glue is optional.

Here it is on the bookshelf in my dining room, adding a little fall flair along with the acorn silhouette I made last year.

I think we’re going to skip getting an actual pumpkin this year. I’m just not really that into it. And since this is the second fake pumpkin I’ve put out this year (the other one can be seen in this older post), along with an assortment of festive pinecones, I feel like my obligation to fall decor has been met.
