Cleaning House

You would think with me spending so much time at home these days that my house would be spotless. Sadly, this is not the case. I have never loved to clean, but I do like having a clean house. Over the years I’ve gotten better at keeping on top of things thanks to the help of Flylady and the force of sheer determination. I really let things slide when I was pregnant, though, since I was so miserable, and then having a newborn was a perfect excuse to continue being lazy. But it’s about time now that I stop making excuses and start taking better care of this place!

The big problem for me is that everything I thought I knew about time management has been thrown out the window with Jack’s arrival. I can’t putter around the house all day moving from one task to another without dragging a tiny human along with me. And when he’s sleeping I’m always torn–do I work on the blog, the shop, or the house? Lately it’s been the blog and the shop, and the house has been suffering. Poor house.

So last night I made a list of chores that need to be completed this week and developed a plan for how to spend naptime. Notice the professional licensure I’ve spent the last five years working towards is last on my priority list! Tis the season of my life for putting my career on the back burner.

A year ago this would have taken me one day at home to knock out, but I’m giving it a week! Don’t get me wrong, I am not the sole housekeeper around here. Nick understands that taking care of a baby is pretty time-consuming and helps a lot when he’s home. But it just ain’t enough. I’m gonna whip myself into shape and start doing a load of laundry every day a la Flylady (I already get dressed to shoes every day and keep my sink pretty clean, so I figure I’m halfway there, haha). I’m also going to attempt to follow along with this for the next few weeks. I don’t have a fantastic track record for sticking with this kind of thing, but I’ve got some friends following along too so I’m feeling hopeful!

Anyone else have a hard time staying on top of housework? I can keep things tidy pretty easily, it’s the clean that gets me!

  1. I struggle with it. Right now, our bedroom looks like a bomb went off in it. I use some Flylady stuff to. I really like checking out her schedules because it reminds me to clean things I wouldn’t think of cleaning.

But when you have an infant, you have infant. Do what you can.

I wonder if it actually gets easier as they get older or not! I feel like he’ll need my attention a little less but will probably be contributing to the chaos!

  2. You’re preaching to the choir!! Between laundry, ironing, vacuuming pet hair, grocery shopping, blogging (which I haven’t done in weeks) and taking care of my little man, well… Little man ALWAYS wins. My todo list gets longer and longer. I just need 1 day a week to catch up!

  3. I’ve actually been working on this since the new place + school + toddler = insanity. With my new mommy command center and two charts I made (inspired by Pinterest) I’m hoping I can get a grip on things.
