Thrifted Bedside Table

Our bedroom is the only room (besides the bathroom) on the second floor of our house. The upstairs is basically one large space that was added on to the top of the house sometime after the original construction. It’s definitely the biggest room I’ve ever lived in and, believe it or not, I find the generous dimensions a little challenging to work with. Example: we have a queen-sized bed (the largest we could fit up our narrow stairs) and there are still five feet of space on either side. Whatever we put beside it always looks dinky and all wrong for the space. I’ve had this small round table next to my side for several months now, but it just wasn’t right. I’ve had my eye out for something wider

I was hoping to pick up a low dresser on craigslist for about fifty bucks, but when I saw this desk at the thrift store for only $16 my wheels started turning. The proportions were perfect and I was really excited about the price.

The duck stickers really sold me on this piece. Just kidding. It was the hardware. Isn’t it cool?

See how much more nicely it fills the space? Ignore the naked windows and air conditioner. This particular corner has been neglected in my decorating efforts.

I definitely don’t need (or want) a desk in here–I’m a big believer that bedrooms are for relaxation. But what I could actually really use is a dressing table. Our bathroom is tiny and cluttered (there’s a reason it’s never been pictured on the blog). A dressing table could provide valuable storage for various accoutrements that are too big for the medicine cabinet. Here are some photos I’ll be taking inspiration from.

I’m thinking I’ll clean it up, paint it, and fill the top and drawers with makeup, jewelry, etc., as well as a few happy, pretty things just to make me smile first thing in the morning and last thing before bed at night. I already smiled just waking up this morning and seeing the unpainted, unstyled desk. I’m so excited to have found something so perfect for under twenty bucks. Hopefully I can get it all fixed up this weekend and have an update for y’all on Monday.

  1. Good idea! I am sure that what ever you do , it will look fantastic!

  2. Great idea to turn a desk into a dressing table! I’m all about those ducks though. Maybe you could paint around them, LOL!

Maybe I’ll continue the duck theme throughout the room, with coordinating pillows and window valances!

  3. Love it. I can’t wait to see what you do with this.
