Happy Mardi Gras, y’all! Today is officially Fat Tuesday, but anyone who’s experienced Carnival for themselves knows that the party pretty much peaks the weekend before. In years past Nick and I have had a lot of fun heading down to New Orleans for Endymion on Saturday, but this year we decided to stay close to home and check out Baton Rouge’s claim to fame–Spanishtown.
We went with our friends Cassie and Trey. Cassie’s husband Nic was actually in the parade–he was walking alongside one of the floats to keep pedestrians at a safe distance. It sounds kind of dull but there’s quite a bit of food and drink involved and it’s considered a job(?!?!) so you get paid cash–Nick’s brother Tim did the same thing and made $75. It’s a pretty sweet gig.
I’m so so so excited to finally be able to mention publicly that Cassie and Nic are expecting! We are really close and I am pretty much beside myself with glee. She’s due in late July so Jack and her kid will be about a year apart. They’ll be like cousins!
Cassie’s been getting in plenty of practice with baby wrangling. I think she’s got a knack for it.
As for the parade, Jack was a little unsure at first, but once he realized there was music he got pretty into it.
I’ve been getting a kick lately out of letting him drink water from my cup. He likes it so much that now whenever one of us is holding a drink he goes for it, haha. Please note that we did not actually give him beer. We just laughed and took photos of him trying to drink it. Instead of, you know, taking it away.
We were a few rows back from the street (where there was plenty of room to lay out a blanket and make ourselves at home), so Nick thought Jack might like to see the floats from his shoulders. Jack had other ideas! He’s very into hair lately.
The whole thing was so much fun he pooped out before the last float had rolled by.
Spanishtown was definitely much smaller and more low-key than the big New Orleans parades, but we really had a lot of fun. And the nice thing is that it was over before dinner so the five of us headed out afterwards for our first boiled crawfish of the season! Crazy delicious. Too bad for Jack I wouldn’t let him have any, haha. Maybe next year!
