Hey guys. Guess what? I’m 28 today! Nick and I are pretty low-key about birthdays. We just do a dinner out and a small gift. Usually I’ve got a wish list written out weeks in advance, but this year I’ve had such a hard time thinking of things that I want! And I asked Nick to please not go out and buy something I might not like just for the sake of having a gift to present on April 5th. I mean, if there was something he really wanted to get me that’s one thing, but choosing gifts is not his forte. So I’m still trying to think of something I might like that’s in the $25 range. I posted on facebook last night that I want for nothing, but I guess that’s not exactly true. There are things that I want but they’re just not realistic at the moment–like a new washer and dryer, or for a crew of workers to come tackle all sorts of projects in and around my house, or to have a maid (oh a maid would be heavenly!). But there’s really nothing I’m just dying for Nick to wrap up in an pretty box and hand over. I even scrolled through my pinterest activity over the last several months for ideas. The only thing I found was this breastfeeding-friendly dress from Old Navy, but I just picked up a similar dress for $5 at Goodwill yesterday. Nursing-friendly dresses are hard to find, but I really don’t need two that look alike. So then I looked through my Etsy favorites. Still nothing. So now I’m browsing the pages of Target. If nothing else I’ll ask for a gift card to Etsy or Ann Taylor Loft, but before conceding defeat I thought I’d consult my lovely readers–what would you buy with $25?

I’m not sure what it says about my life that I don’t have a list of material wants a mile long, but I think maybe it means that I’m happy. I certainly feel pretty satisfied lately! And I love birthdays, not for the attention or the gifts but because I weirdly enjoy getting older. Another year of living the good life under my belt! I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, and please do share your gift ideas with me! I can’t wait to hear what you come up with!

  1. I think you should get this owl:

Because I like it a lot but I keep talking myself out of it because I’m not whatnots kind of person. No spot in my place for it.

Hahaha does it really have to be your birthday to get a beer? I’ll have one of those just because it’s Friday!

  2. $25 is about what it costs for me to take a pair of pants to my favorite tailor and have them fitted to my exact measurements. It’s one of those things I never feel I have the money for, but if someone gives me gift money, I find something that doesn’t fit quite right and traipse off to the tailor.

  3. You are such a doll! I wish you lived closer to me so we could hang out! So glad you do this blog so I can get to know you! As for a suggestion for the $25 gift, maybe a certificate to get some nicely-printed photos of Jack or even better, a family portrait? I often wish I had a few (or even one) official (i.e. done by a professional photographer) family portraits.

Aw, thanks! I am planning on ordering prints of the photos I took of Jack at Easter, and I’m hoping to have a family photo session with a professional around his first birthday!

  4. I like the idea of getting a photobook from shutterfly or a similar service! A gift that you really can treasure forever. Maybe some of those instagram books/magnets you see everywhere?

  5. I don’t know, but happy birthday anyway!
wait, I have a good idea- smartwool socks. I have a big collection, most of which came one birthday gift or Christmas gift at a time.
Maybe by April you don’t need to wear socks in your neck of the woods? I’m still wearing them up here!

Thank you! It’s definitely getting close to swimsuit season here, but there’s always next year! I do love the sensation of cozy toes.

  6. I’m a Bibliophile. I’ll take a good book any day.
