Weight Loss Update

It’s been about a month since I shared with y’all that I need to lose some weight. Since then I’ve:

  • joined a gym and started doing 30-60 minutes of cardio 3-5 times per week
  • cut back on soft drinks, alcohol, and second helpings (this is hard because food is delicious)
  • weaned off the SSRI antidepressant I was taking (SSRI’s can lead to weight gain in some people, and my doctor and I agreed that I was ready)

And in return I:

  • feel tired, irritable, and unhappy
  • have gained two pounds

WHAT THE WHAT. That is not how this is supposed to work. You eat better, exercise, and feel better, not worse! What gives? Nick and I had a long talk the other night and both agreed to spend less time on our iPhones, which should help with the irritability (I think part of the reason I’m irritable is that real life is constantly interrupting the important things I’m looking at on the internet). If I’m still feeling this way in a few weeks I may consider another antidepressant. And if I’m still not losing any weight then I guess I’ll start counting calories to see if I’m really cutting my intake as much as I think that I am.

I’ve lost weight before. I know how this works. The only thing I did differently then that I’m not doing now is tracking every bite that I eat-that’s a boatload of work but if that’s what it takes I guess I have no choice. I’m so over feeling uncomfortable in my own body.

  1. Charlotte, Did you have your thyroid checked?

  2. Charlotte, I love your posts! I wanted to “weigh” in on this one (haha) because I’m struggling with weight loss too and my sister just told me about Suzanne Sommers’ eating plan….my sister has 3 small kids under 6, so no time for extravagant cooking or logging food…she and her husband are really loving “Sommersize” and lost 20 lbs each pretty quickly. I also love that you identified time on the phone as a stressor…it’s hard to ignore sometimes! Anyway, just thought I’d share. It’s funny how I feel like I know you from reading your blog :)

Thanks, Marilynn! I love your little pun there. I’ve never heard of Sommersize, so glad to hear they’ve had good results!

  3. That’s tough! Maybe it’s at the waxing point in your cycle? Sounds a little like PMS. I’ve wanted to lose weight for the past 5 years (since having kids). But I love food too, and I don’t want to count and record everything. When I try something, if I don’t see immediate results then I don’t stick with it. I’ll be watching to see what works for you. :-)

I would be inclined to agree with you, except for the fact that my weight has been slowly creeping up all month (and I’ve been grouchy the whole time, too!).

  4. Well that sucks! But I admit I did chuckle at your description. :)

  5. I’m trying to get back in shape and lose weight. I found an on-line tracker for food intake/exercise - http://www.loseit.com. I somehow find it easier than the Weight Watchers online service … plus it’s free. the food database seems quite good. I’ve lost weight before and you are right - tracking food intake is key. Don’t give up!
